substrate mixture question Aquatic Plant Forum

Jan 30, 2008  The second way is to try for a sediment layer under the main substrate, and that can be river silt, backyard silty subsoil, Diamond Black (Leonardite), and some even use manure. The main substrate can be pool filter sand or equivalent, SMS, Flourite, EC, etc. ADA Aquasoil is already nutrient loaded so having a sediment sublayer is overkill with it.

Gravel+Substrate? Aquatic Plant Forum

May 27, 2011  The finer substrate naturally migrates down and the larger rock comes to the top. If you have fine plants like hair grass, or stem plants without roots it is hard to plant in the larger rock. I fought for weeks to keep some of the plants in the substrate. The other thing is now after a couple months it looks like plain aquarium rock on the bottom.

Substrate on amazon - General Discussion - C.A.R.E.

Aug 05, 2021  Agreed with @Patrick_G from what I've heard organic soil is usually used since manufacturers aren't able to add ammonia into their soil and still call it organic. As for gravel and soil I personally haven't tried that. However Fluval Stratum has been working great for me which has a diameter of about 2-4mm so I imagine if you went with gravel it would work well at least in terms of size.

Substrate smells in the next day Aquatic Plant Forum

Nov 13, 2019  A substrate without smell is not natural. A substrate should be a chemical factory. The worst substrate I have ever smelt (truly offensive, rotten egg smell) was one I dug up in the wild, by the side of a road. It was so bad I didn't want to use it. Its become my best substrate and the water means there is no smell (water acts as a smell barrier).
